1The Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program is the most economical way to get a lot of good, healthy Harmony Farm produce. Our CSA program aims to restore the connection between people, their food, and the land. Members and their families are always welcome at the farm and have the opportunity to see where their food comes from and how it is grown. We encourage their participation in the garden through a limited number of working shares, various volunteer opportunities throughout the season, and organized community events on the farm.
How it works…
CSA members essentially buy a membership in the farm to receive a share of the produce throughout the growing season. This gives them a significant price break in comparison to buying produce by the item. It also helps us avoid the expenses of taking out an operating loan because CSA funds are available in the beginning of the season when we need to buy seeds, heat the greenhouse, and prepare the soil but don’t yet have any crop income to cover these costs. CSA members also share some of the risk (and the rewards too!) with the farmer. In a tough year, members should expect to receive smaller produce shares due to lower production, while in a good year the farmer will share the bounty with members through larger shares and extra produce.
The Shares...
The standard share is $550 for the 20 week growing season from early June until late October. Members can expect to receive 6 to 8 items each week in the spring while things are getting started, then 11 to 13 items (and usually more) per week through the remainder of the season.
There a limited number of working share memberships. the working share is the same as the standard share, but members receive a $100 discount in exchange for completing 60 hours of work over the course of the season. Typical activities include harvesting, weeding, and planting as well as assisting in the maintenance of the equipment, structures, and grounds around the farm. The number of working shares we can support is limited by the financial constraints of the farm. Priority will be given to existing members who have completed their working share hours the previous season, those who can make the time in their schedules to work during predetermined times throughout the season according to the needs of the grower, and those with skills or abilities that are determined to be especially useful to farm operations.
Picking up your produce...
Members will pick up the weekly share on Thursday evenings between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM. If you are unable to pick up your produce at your regular time, please have a friend or neighbor pick up the share for you, or call to arrange for your share be packed and stored in the cooler until you can pick it up, or you can choose to have it donated to a local food pantry or soup kitchen.
